Azad will be next CM: Congress

BEIGH SHAMIM AHMED :- June 05: Congress Party Tuesday said it will never form any sort of alliance with National Conference and will contest elections on its own. The party has reiterated that Ghulam Nabi Azad will be Chief Ministerial candidate of the party.In a statement, former Minister and MLA Inderwal G M Saroori, former Minister Haji Nisar, former MLA Sopore Haji Abdul Rashid, former MLC Mohammad Amin Bhat and senior Congress leader Surinder Singh Channi have claimed that Azad will be the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. They said Congress party has its own identity and in no case, this party will form any kind of alliance with National Conference.

Water Testing and Awareness programme organised at Kargil by CCDU

Water Testing and Awareness is one of the core activities of the Communication and Capacity Development Unit/ WEMTEP in ensuring safe water quality standards andpromoting education inrural masses about the importance of water and conservation under National Rural Drinking Water Programme. In this direction, the Department organized free water testing camp at Govt. High Secondary School Kargil. Principal of the institute Mrs Najuma Bano inaugurated the Camp and laidemphasis on the conservation and importance ofsafe drinking water. The students, locals brought their water samples of different sources for on-spot testing by CCDU Experts. More than 220 samples were tested by the team of experts and declared test results to the consumers with necessary information regarding contamination of water and its ill effects.The Department also organised an intensified refresher training programme for the PHE officials at district PHE laboratory Bagh-e-Khumami Kargil as Capacity building of PHED Human resource, associated with drinking water supply monitoring and surveillance. More than 50 PHE officials participated in the programme. CCDU experts demonstrated various methods of water tests to give a broader view to the staff, so that they can apply the methods and techniques in a better way. Executive engineer PHE Division of Kargil inaugurated the camp and while addressing the gathering he said that “ In the past also CCDU shared their Knowledge and techniques in water quality and Surveillance. Today their presence here is their long term commitment towards Capacity Building for this remote District of J&K.He added that the initiative taken by the officers and staff members of the CCDU Department in bringing out such well informative programme which is very helpful for the staff. I wish the Department and the officers, all the best in their endeavour to render meaningful service to the community.

Srinagar, June 02: The first Sopore T20 Cricket Contest organised by Sopore Police under the aegis of DIG North, Kashmir concluded today at Khushal Stadium Tulibal Sopore with an impressive closing ceremony.Mr.

Sajad Ahmad Kichloo, Hon’ble Minister of State for Home was the Chief Guest at the occasion. Besides Hon'ble MLA Rafiabad Mr. Javid Ahmad Dar, MLA Sopore Mr Haji Mohammad Ashraf and MLA Sangrama Mr. Basharat Ahmad Bukhari were the guests of Honour.Director General of Police Mr. Ashok Prasad also attended the function with other police officers including ADGP, IGP Kashmir, DIG North Kashmir. DC Baramulla and several other officers of Army and Civil Administration also witnessed the closing ceremony.54 cricket teams from different areas of Police District Sopore participated in the tournament, the final of which was played today at Khushal Sports Stadium between Paradise Cricket Club (PCC) Tarzoa and Syndicate Eleven Sopore. Syndicate won the toss and elected to bat first and scored set a target of 122 losing all but one wicket before PCC in the allotted 20 over’s . Irshad Ahmad and Imtiyaz Ahmad scored the highest runs; 41 each. Ab. Hamid and Rafiq Ahmad of PCC took three wickets each.The winning team was awarded the winners trophy along with a cash prize of Rs 50 thousand, 30 thousand were rewarded to the runner up team along with runners up trophy. Besides ten thousand were given each to Man of the series and Man of the match.The tournament was started last year and inaugurated by the then Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani in the month of June 2012.Director General of Police speaking on the occasion said that Police is organizing such events, besides, their routine duty to channelize the energy of youth in a positive direction which otherwise has a tendency to fall prey to the exploitation by vested interests. He congratulated Sopore Police for organizing the event.Superintendent of Police Sopore, Imtiyaz Hussain said the "sole aim" of organizing the tournament was to bridge the gap between police and the people. "This event was aimed at providing an opportunity for us to know each other and clear some perceived misconceptions," he said.

Inter-College Seminar on World No Tobacco day held at GWC, M.A Road, Students have pivotal role in eradicating tobacco menace: Lone

SRINAGAR, JUNE, 01:- Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Mohammad Akbar Lone today enjoined upon the students to play their role for making general masses aware about the hazards and ill effects of smoking and tobacco so that menace of tobacco is eradicated from the State. He said that organising seminars and  awareness camps in the educational institutions will help in curbing this menace to a great extent. He also mentioned that government has also launched initiatives and the smoking in government offices has already been banned.This was stated by the Minister while addressing in a seminar cum inter-college symposium on “Hazards of chewing Gutka”. The function was organized by organized by Voluntary Health organization of India and J&K Voluntary Health Association (JKVHA) in collaboration with District Administration Srinagar and Government Women’s College, M.A Road here today .Among others Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Mr. Farooq Ahmad Shah, Chief Post Master General, Mr. John Samuel, Principal GCW, M.A Road, Mrs. Shaheen Altaf, Executive Director JKVHA, Mr. A M Mir, DIG Civil Defence, Mr. Mubarak Ahmad Ganai, eminent citizens, staff and large gathering of college students from various colleges were present on the occasion.Mr. Lone also underscored the need of to make the anti-tobacco seminar in educational institutes a regular feature to get rid of this nuisance. He stressed upon the students, teachers, stake holders, members of voluntary organizations and other sections of the society to raise their voice in this regard.The Minister said such activities are necessary to make students and people aware about the harmful and hazardous effects of tobacco and other Tobacco products. He enjoined upon the students to play their pivotal role to carry the anti-tobacco message to the society. He asked the colleges to take strict action against students indulging in smoking and use of tobacco products.The Minister lauded the role of voluntary organizations and the participant students for taking active role for this public oriented cause and said such activity can lead towards healthy and sound society.Other speakers also highlighted the ill effects of the smoking and tobacco products. They said that smoking causes health ailments in the form of various diseases besides economic losses to the smokers. They said, use of tobacco products is major cause of various dangerous and horrifying diseases.They suggest that ban on tobacco in  government offices and public places should be implemented strictly and exemplary punishment should be given to the erring employees. They also demanded complete ban on the import of Gutka and tobacco products in the State.On the occasion, students from various colleges also spoke on the topic and expressed their views. Later, the prizes were distributed among the participant students. The first three positions were respectively bagged by Ms Asma Zahoor, of GWC, M A Road, Ms. Samreen from College of Education, Mr. Junaid Yaseen from Islamia College Srinagar. District Development Commissioner, Srinagar and Chief Post Master General also spoke on the topic. Dr Nighat Ara anchored the programme.

Labourer electrocuted in Sopore

Srinagar, June 01: Ghulam Nabi Shalla, age about 20 years, son of Late Ghulam Mohammad resident of Syed Sultan, Arampora, Sopore allegedly received an electric shock at an under construction two storied hospital building at Rajpora, Rampora, Sopore and fell down, resulting in his on spot death. Body handed over his relatives for last rites after completing all legal formalities. He was engaged as labourer at the construction site

Non-local passenger dies in Kulgam

Srinagar, June 01: A passenger Rifaqat Ali, aged about 80 years, son of Sharafat Ali Pathan resident of UP Moradabad, who was traveling from Srinagar to Jammu in a Bus bearing registration number UP-22T/2667 collapsed suddenly when the bus stopped at Toll Post, Kulgam, in the jurisdiction of police station Qazigund. Body handed over his relatives for last rites after completing all legal formalities.

Amar Singh College Srinagar Celebrated “World No Tobacco Day”

BEIGH SHAMIM AHMED :-The NSS wing of Amar Singh College, Srinagar celebrated “World No Tobacco Day” on 31^st May, 2013 in the Bukhari Hall of College. Dr. Shabnam Ara (NSS Programme Officer) while presenting the welcome address, briefed about the significance of organizing such programmes to create awareness about tobacco hazards. The Guest of Honour, Mr. Imtiyaz Ismail Parray (IPS) in his address highlighted the legal and legislative aspect of tobacco abuse, stressing upon getting acquainted with the laws and rights available to us to curb this menace. On the occasion NSS volunteers presented a skit themed “tamakh tawan” and a Ladisha which were eye opener for the public regarding tobacco menace. Prof. M. H. Nadvi, Senior Faculty member gave the religious perspective of tobacco abuse and condemned its use quoting many verses from Holy Quran and Hadith. Dr. Sheikh Tanveer Salam, Assistant Professor Zoology gave the medical perspective of the tobacco addiction, displaying some disturbing pictures of Cancers and Gangrenes caused by Smoking with an explicit message for both students and teachers to quit smoking. Dr Gulzar Ahmad Paddar (Staff Secretary) in his concluding address suggested that glorification of smoking through media and pressure from friends and peer groups are mainly responsible for tobacco menace in our young generation.  Rapporteurs for the programme were Dr. Nikhat Nabi and Dr. Altaf  Hussain Parra. The programme was concluded by vote of thanks by Dr. Tahmina Yousuf (Head Department of Zoology)
