Five Taliban militants die in airport attack in Pakistan
16
December ,INB NEWS KASHMIR :- Pakistani
security forces cornered the last members of a group of Taliban militants who
staged a deadly raid on an airport in the country’s troubled northwest, and all
five died in the ensuing gunfight, officials said on Sunday.Three were shot by
the security forces and two others blew themselves up in the nearby village
where they had holed up, the officials said. Another five of the militants who
attacked the military side of the international airport in Peshawar city on
Saturday night with rockets and car bombs were killed during the assault. Four
civilians also died and over 40 people were wounded in the initial attack, and
a policeman was killed in the final gun battlePeshawar is on the edge of
Pakistan’s tribal region, the main sanctuary for al-Qaida and Taliban militants
in the country. The city has frequently been attacked in the past few years,
but Saturday was the first strike against the airport, which is jointly used by
the air force and civilian authorities. The airport is the third major military
base attacked by the Taliban in roughly the past 18 months, a sign of the
militant group’s continued strength despite multiple army offensives targeting
their tribal sanctuary. The militants killed on Sunday were hiding in an
unfinished house in Pawaka village, located about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from
the airport, said Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister in surrounding
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.Three of the militants were shot by security forces
when they tried to escape, said Mr. Hussain. Both he and the military said the
two other militants detonated their suicide vests when security forces stormed
the building. One policeman was killed and another wounded in the gunfight,
said Mr. Hussain
Six soldiers killed in deadly Siachen avalanche
16 December ,INB NEWS KASHMIR :- Six
soldiers were killed and one is missing when an avalanche hit the Siachen glacier area on Sunday. Six
men belonging to the 1st Assam Regiment, deployed in the Hanif sub-sector in
Siachen glacier area, died in the avalanche hit around 7am, Army sources said
here. One soldier is still missing and efforts are being made to locate him,
they said. "The incident happened during inter-post movement of the
soldiers," they said. This
is for the first time in several years that an avalanche has hit an Indian
position in the glacier area, the sources said. The Assam unit is part of the
102 Siachen Brigade and is located at altitudes of around 15-16,000 feet, they
said. An avalanche had hit
a Pakistani Army camp in the glacier area last year killing over 100 troops. India has deployed its troops
in Siachen for close to 30 years now and has lost more people to the weather
and terrain than to enemy bullets. However,
it has brought down such casualties to a large extent by ensuring proper
adaptation of the personnel to the conditions and through extensive scientific
research by DRDO to improve living conditions of jawans there. India and Pakistan, which have
held several rounds of talks to resolve the Siachen issue, were close to an
agreement a few years back on demilitarising the region but the accord failed
to see the light of the day as Pakistan refused to authenticate its military position. Pakistan army chief Gen Ashfaq
Parvez Kayani had recently said that India had hardened its position on the
Siachen issue as compared to the 1989 stance it had adopted, saying that it
"takes two hands to clap". Army
chief Gen Bikram Singh has made it clear that the Indian military would not
like to move out of the "strategically important" icy heights for
which a "lot of blood has been shed".He has said the Army has
conveyed its views to the government which has to take a final decision in that
regard

There have been attacks and rocket fires in past. Panic has spread among the residents of the area”, he added. He said despite claiming that army was not active in Srinagar, they were conducting such surveys in the city. “If any untoward happens in the area, the responsibility for that will lie on the army, police and the authorities”, said Akbar. However, Defence Spokesperson, Col J S Brar rejected the Hurriyat (G) statement calling it ‘baseless’. “Army is not operating in the city and the statement is baseless”, he said.

Experiences from ground The book captures many aspects of the past two decades
Manoj Sheeri's Book Khusboo-i-Kashmir released by IGP Kashmir Mr. S M Sahai |
Book:
Khusboo-i-Kashmir
Author: Manoj Sheeri
Published: with the assistance of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages
Available at: Gulshan Book House Residency Road Srinagar
Reviewer: Ashfaq AhmedKhusboo-e-Kashmir (Fragrance of Kashmir), a fictional short story book written by Manoj Sheeri is an impeccable composition of first-hand experiences that the people of Kashmir, both Hindus and Muslims had during the tumultuous years. The author is a Police officer having a journalistic background. His professional experiences, both as a police officer and a journalist, have evolved him into real time source of experiences which he has very articulately transpired in his stories. The foreword of the book is written by former dean, faculty of arts, University of Kashmir, and an eminent Urdu professor and critic, Prof. Zamaan Azurdha. The stories in the book give an extra ordinary peep into the changing trends of Kashmiri society, keeping pace with the modernization in the post globalization era. A reader particularly, a Kashmiri can well identify himself with the characters of the stories, touching his soul.A collection of twelve stories that give an insight into the tribulations faced by Kashmiri Pandits, those who migrated from the valley, and those who stayed back. The book starts with a traumatic story of a poor Muslim whose aspirations though fulfilled on his son’s becoming a doctor were left in a lurch. The parents who struggled so hard for his education were finally left to fend for themselves, and the son is lost to the riches of Gulf.Another nerve touching story is of a pundit couple who upon migration not only suffered from the trauma of exile but also underwent debilitating erosion of identity when their sons married to non-Kashmiri girls who had no empathy with their linguistic and cultural ethos. The couple had to sing their traditional Kashmiri beats all by themselves with daughters-in-law just looking strangely at them.Hasrat Naa Tamaam narrates a woeful tale of Jawahar Lal, a well-known apple grower and a merchant of Rafiabad, the fruit bowl of Kashmir, whose soul shook when he was brandished as a thief by his mere touching an apple at a fruit seller’s shop in Jammu. The person who grew up growing and supplying apples to the whole country was destined to such tragedy was a shock beyond description. The migration brought with itself miseries of unknown kind and magnitude. Jawahar Lal couldn’t withstand the agony that came up with a trifle and died without relishing his first yield from his splendid orchids that were brought by his worker from Kashmir.Girdaab gives an insight to the plight and sufferings that the migrant Pandit family of Deeraj and Raju had to go through in the shanty camps that they had to live in. It devastated them emotionally as well as physically. They came close to committing suicide but ultimately life won with the hope that good days will follow.Ghar is a story of a carpenter Abdul Rahim, who loses his house to a mysterious fire. His another battle begins with insurance company that declines to pay him adequately as they doubt that he had such a good house.Another short story Form Mazroobi gives an ironic depiction of what destiny could have in store for a person. Head Constable Mohan Singh alias Form Mazroobi, was better known in his police station, as he professionally kept number of Form Mazroobi’s (a legal document that acts as Medico Legal evidence) in cases of injuries or deaths during the cases of violence. The shoot outs and grenade blasts had made it a most sought after document in every police station. Head Constable Mohan Singh who had filled the Form Mazroobis for innumerable persons during his duty had nothing left for himself when he was injured in a grenade blast and died with no one to write the Form Mazroobi for him.Another story of a Pandit doctor Radha Krishan, who preferred to stay back in his ancestral village in Lolab, offers the reader a melodramatic account. He was haunted both by militants as well as Army after he was kidnapped by the militants to attend their wounded Commander in their hide out. The doctor had to face the wrath of the Army who took his kidnapping as complicity with the militants. Much to his shock, after his release from the Army camp he was again taken away by the militants who suspected it as his visit to the Army camp. Finding himself tossed between frying pan and fire, the doctor finally decided to migrate.

A J&K police officer has come up with a collection of short stories based on the relations of Kash
miri Pandits and Muslims since 1990, the year anti-India insurgency broke out in the state.Khusboo-e-Kashmir (Fragrance of Kashmir), written in chaste Urdu, reflects the trauma faced by both Muslims and Pandits and how they dealt with it over the years."The book is based on my firsthand experience as an ordinary Kashmiri who lived in the Valley as well as in Jammu during the years of turmoil," said author Manoj Sheeri."I have witnessed the sufferings of Pandits (living as migrants) and Muslims."Sheeri said the collection, though fiction, has been tailored out of different situations encountered by the Kashmiris in general. The author hails from the small village of Sheeri in Baramulla district. Like many others in his community, Sheeri's family too migrated from the Valley and settled in Jammu city.Away from his home village, he added his village's name to his name for a sense of belonging. In Jammu, Sheeri worked as a senior reporter with a local daily for a couple of years and later joined the police force. Currently, he is the incharge of police Media cell or J&K Police spokesman. In almost every story of his, Sheeri brings in the component of syncretic 'Kashmiriyat' to show that the ties between the two communities are intact. One story is about an andhi maa (blind mother), in which a gunman befools an old woman. Doctor Sahab is the story of a pharmacist who has to face the wrath of both security forces and militants.Hasrat natamam (unfulfilled desire) is about the abject life in the migrant camps of Jammu. Doctor Sahab is Sheeri's favourite.Set in the Sogam area of picturesque Lolab in Kupwara district, close to the Line of Control, Doctor Sahab, a lone Kashmiri Pandit Radha Krishan, decides not to migrate during the early 90s.Though a pharmacist, Krishan would travel several kilometres to treat patients. One day, militants abduct him to treat their commander. They keep him for the night and release him the next morning. However, after his release, Krishan is detained by the security forces for going with the militants. The forces release him after three days. Later, militants capture him again, asking him he was in the army camp. All this frustrates Krishan and he decides to migrate. But the next morning, when he moves out with his baggage, he finds villagers begging him not to leave.
